I have a 6 year old in the 1st grade. The staff at the school is saying that he could possibly be ADDHD. I have considerable problems with him at home also. He does really well with his schoolwork when he pays attention. I feel like he tries but has been unsuccessful in trying to behave. His Father and I have disciplined him in everyway we know how, but nothing has helped his behavior.

I have seen many kids with ADDHD and I know that those parents did not correct their kids. I did, so how can my son have it? I know that is a harsh statement but it is all I have to go on. I really do not know the symptoms, but I have my ears and eyes open.The school is sending home a packet so that I can evaluate my son, and they are doing the same.

I guess my biggest question is that I am scared that just because my child cannot behave that the school is going to expect me to put him on Ritalin so that the teacher can control him. I am afraid that this ADDHD thing is over-diagnosed.

You and your husband should sit down, talk to him, and ask him what is on his mind without rear of punishment. Set rules for him and stick to them. You both have to work together and be consistent or he will not believe you mean what you say.

Please do not be afraid to have him tested. Working closely with the school and your doctor will be the best thing for him. Talking about your fears to them will help all of you.
